I made these vegan mushroom steaks on a whim one night and they turned out too good not to share!! They’re tender, savory, juicy, and amazing. And best of all, they're cruelty free!
Ingredients:
8-10 portobello mushroom caps
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
1/2 cup soy sauce
1 tsp liquid smoke
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
Vegan steak sauce for glazing (optional)
Directions:
Place all of the mushroom caps in a large shallow dish (a baking dish or sheet usually works best).
Combine the rest of the ingredients in a bowl.
Pour the marinade over the mushroom caps.
Marinate the mushrooms for 5 minutes on each side.
Heat your grill to about 450° F (medium-high heat).
Place the mushrooms on your grill.
Grill the mushrooms for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they become a little charred. ○ You can brush a little steak sauce on each side while grilling them if desired. These are delicious both with and without the steak sauce.
Serve immediately with any side you'd like (veggies, potatoes, pasta) or put them on little slider buns!
Tips and Tricks:
These mushrooms have a smokey, meaty flavor to them, but they will still taste like mushrooms and not actually steak. However, they're a great substitute for when you're craving something savory and hearty! They're also great for bbq's and parties.
You can make the marinade the day before to save time during your cooking process.
The mushrooms will shrink slightly while on the grill, but they will stay super juicy.
